Straight answerMost wasp nests around Auckland homes belong to German wasps or Asian paper wasps. Both sting to defend the nest, and German wasps attack in numbers when it is disturbed. Don't poke, block, burn or flood a nest. Tell us your suburb and where the nest is, and we'll pass it to a local pest controller who calls you with a price.
Which wasp built the nest?
Look at the nest, not the wasps. An open, umbrella-shaped comb where you can see the cells belongs to paper wasps. A covered nest of grey or brown paper, often hidden with one entrance hole, belongs to German or common wasps. Those covered nests hold thousands of wasps by late summer, so they are the ones to keep well away from.
Where is the nest?
German wasps usually nest underground, often in a sunny bank, but they also move into roof spaces, wall cavities and hollow trees. Paper wasps hang their combs above ground: under eaves, in hedges, on fences and in sheds. Where the nest sits decides how hard the job is and what it costs, so pick the closest match.
Nest in the ground
A hole in the lawn, a bank or under a path with wasps streaming in and out.
Nest in the roof or eaves
Wasps going in under the roofline, or a comb hanging from the soffit.
Nest in a wall cavity
Wasps using a gap in the cladding, a vent or a weep hole.
Nest in a tree, hedge or shed
Combs in a hedge you were trimming, or a ball of paper in a tree.
What to do until the nest is dealt with
- Keep people and pets at least several metres back. German wasps defend the area around a nest, roughly 7 metres.
- Leave the entrance alone. Don't block it, spray it, hose it, burn it or knock the nest down.
- Note where the wasps go in and out, and how high it is. That is what the pest controller asks first.
- If a family member has reacted badly to a sting before, keep them indoors and keep their prescribed autoinjector close.
How wasp nest removal works
A pest controller finds the entrance, often treats it late in the day when most wasps are home, and checks it worked. Most nests die within a day. Nests inside walls or roofs may need the entrance found from inside first. See what wasp nest removal involves, step by step, including what happens to the dead nest.
What it costs in Auckland
Published Auckland prices for one nest mostly sit between about $120 and $350. Easy ground or hedge nests are at the low end. Roof voids, wall cavities, nests up high and properties with several nests cost more. These are a guide from published prices in October 2026, and the pest controller quotes your job. See the full price guide.
Is it bees, not wasps?
Honey bees and bumblebees are not a pest job. A cluster of bees hanging from a branch is a honey bee swarm, and local beekeepers usually collect swarms for free. Bumblebee nests are normally left alone. Unsure what you are looking at?, our bees vs wasps guide shows the differences before you book anything.
Doing it yourself
The Department of Conservation describes a DIY method for single, easy-to-reach nests. It is not for nests in walls or roofs, nests up a ladder, or anyone who might be allergic. Read the DIY guide and its limits before you try, and stop the moment wasps come out.

Questions people ask
Does Auckland Council remove wasp nests?
Not on private land. Auckland Council says property owners are responsible for pests on their own land and it generally doesn't remove them, though it can give advice. The council does control wasps on its own land, such as parks and reserves. Report a nest on council land to Auckland Council (09 301 0101).
How quickly do the wasps die after a nest is treated?
Most nests die within a day of treatment, the Department of Conservation says. You may still see a few wasps around the entrance for a while after the visit. If wasps are still busy a day or two later, tell the pest controller so they can check the nest again.
Is it safe to stay home while a wasp nest is treated?
Usually, yes. Keep windows near the nest shut, keep children and pets inside, and stay out of the area until the pest controller says it is clear. Ask them which product they used and when pets can go back near from the treated spot.
When is wasp season worst in Auckland?
Nests grow all summer and hold the most wasps from late summer into autumn. Searches for wasp nest removal in Auckland peak in February. Landcare Research names February to May as the peak wasp period, and some German wasp nests survive Auckland's mild winters and keep growing.
